The job

What actually happened

The structural conversion had been done by someone else and then stalled. The owners had a watertight stone shell, new glazing and nothing else — no services, no floors, no walls, no plaster.

Sixteen weeks later they moved in.

Working in a stone barn is not like working in a house. There is very little that is straight, almost nothing you can chase into, and everything needs designing around the structure rather than through it. Services were run in stud linings and a raised floor void, which also solved the insulation and the underfloor heating in one go.

The double-height living space needed a lighting scheme rather than a light fitting. We used a mix of concealed uplighting to the beams, low-level circulation lighting and pendant drops over the island, all zoned so the room reads completely differently in the evening.

Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a boot room, a utility and an open plan living space. One programme, one point of contact.
