Chris built a reputation on these before Skipton Renovations existed, and they are still the job he most enjoys. A media wall is where carpentry, electrics, plastering and lighting all have to land within a couple of millimetres of each other. That is exactly the kind of coordination this business is built around.
The details that separate a good one from a bad one
Almost anyone can stud out a wall and screw a TV to it. The difference shows in the reveals: whether the fire sits truly flush, whether the shadow gaps run parallel, whether the lighting washes the wall evenly or spots it. We set out the wall around the fire and the screen you have actually chosen rather than a generic opening, which is why the finished thing reads as part of the house rather than something bolted on.
Cables you never see again
Every cable — power, HDMI, aerial, network, soundbar, subwoofer — is run inside the structure to the exact point it is needed, with spare capacity for the kit you have not bought yet. Sockets sit behind the screen. Nothing hangs. If you later change the TV or add a console, there is a route for it.
Built into the room, not just against it
The strongest media walls do more than hold a television. They square up an awkward chimney breast, swallow the clutter of a family room, or take a long, thin lounge and give it a proper focal point. We look at the whole room before we design the wall, and quite often the wall is only part of what we suggest.
Questions we get asked
Do I need to have chosen the fire and TV first?
Ideally yes, or at least the sizes. The whole wall is set out around those two openings, so knowing the exact models means the finished reveals are tight rather than packed out.
Can you build one in a rented property?
It is a permanent structural change, so you would need the landlord's written consent. If you have that, yes.
How much does a media wall cost?
It depends enormously on width, storage and whether the room needs rewiring behind it. We give a fixed price against a drawing, so you are comparing a real number and not a range.
